Kentucky Revenge Game!

On Saturday September 23rd, the North Carolina Tar Heels had their home opener against Kentucky. This highly anticipated match-up has been marked on the Tar Heels calendar since Kentucky knocked them out in the regional finals last spring. Coming off a strong away weekend with two convincing wins against Delaware and Rowan, the Tar Heels looked to improve upon their 2-0 record.

The atmosphere was electric as both teams hit the ice, ready for action. Throughout the first period, both teams showcased their fast-paced play style resulting in several scoring opportunities. Despite their best efforts, it was the Tar Heels who broke the deadlock just before the intermission and took a 1-0 lead. This momentum carried through the intermission as the Tar Heels scored right out the gate of the second period to increase their lead to 2.

This didn’t discourage Kentucky as they capitalized on a 5 on 3 powerplay, which cut the Tar Heels lead in half. The Tar Heels however held their heads high and bounced back with a quick goal the next shift to recapture their 2-goal lead. They continued the pressure and physical play which frustrated the Kentucky players who took penalty after penalty. With multiple powerplays, the Tar Heels dominated possession and it wasn’t long until they scored again to make it 4-1. However, another Kentucky powerplay resulted in a goal which left the Tar Heels with a 2-goal lead heading into the final period.

The Tar Heels looked to shut down all scoring chances for the Kentucky offense in this final period to protect their lead. They did this while controlling puck possession and continuing to create scoring chances. As well, with stellar goaltending form Joel Hughes the puck stayed out of the Tar Heel net, and they comfortably held onto a 4-2 victory!
