Alumni Reflections: on their playing years at UNC

Bob Godding, UNC Ice Hockey, 1978 – 81

  • Our home rink was Four Seasons Ice in Greensboro. No regulation ice rinks in the Triangle Area at that time!
  • We did a pre-Christmas road trip to Atlanta/Alabama and layed Georgia State, UAB Huntsville, and Georgia Tech!
  • Our home rink was now Daniel Boone in Hillsborough.  We did a Spring Road trip to Atlanta. Georgia Tech and Duke. I separated my shoulder from playing the Dukies.
  • We played NC State in Hillsborough on 2/22/1980 at the same time that “Miracle on Ice” was occurring. They announced the Olympic Scores during our game. I still Skate with a good friend who we played against in that game!
  • We played Fort Bragg/82 Airborne team in Fayetteville – Extremely physical game against young guys who were “trained killers”!  I sewed my “Army Combat Patch” onto my Carolina  Sweater!  They went easy on me!
  • Our Home Rink was still Daniel Boone in Hillsborough.
  • Spring Road Trip to Washington DC.  Played Georgetown in the Cap Center. The team was hosted by Washington Caps for an NHL game vs. Buffalo Sabres!  We saw “French Connection Line” play! Gil Perreault broke his wrist in that game.
  • UNC Ice Hockey Club Team Spring Cookout was at Morehead House in Orange County, (a couple of team members were Moreheads) March 1981.  Same day UNC beat UVA in NCAA Final Four. Team Party {with kegs of beer} was “relocated” to Franklin St. for celebration!
