HILLSBOROUGH, NC- Despite high team energy, the Tar Heels fell to the Seahawks 4-3 on Saturday night. This concluded a series of back-to-back losses for the Tar Heels.
Saturday was the final home game of the 2024-2025 campaign, which brought many bittersweet feelings as the Tar Heels took the ice. For many, this was their last game on the ice as a Tar Heel. This was the case for Tommy Gilligan, the team leader in assists.
Gilligan scored the first goal of the night and his second goal of the season early in the first period. While UNCW scored near the period’s end, this did not upset the Tar Heels. Gilligan’s goal inspired the team to keep fighting, as the veteran Gilligan used his speed and determination, despite recovering from an illness, to secure the Tar Heel goal.
“Felt good to contribute, feels really good right now” Gilligan said on getting the first goal of the game “started this way and hopefully it continues.”
As the team entered the second period, team spirit was high and they were ready to take on the ice. While UNCW did manage the first goal in this period, this did not stop the Tar Heels. With five minutes remaining in the second period, the Tar Heels tied the game up with a goal from the Freshman Nic Gingras. This glory was short-lived though, as moments later UNCW snatched another goal and regained the upper hand.
The Tar Heels entered the ice with a mission for the game’s final period. This became extremely evident when senior Chandler Kotseos found the back of the net in the third period. Kotseos’ goal created a stalemate and the tension on the ice was at a high. Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, with about five minutes left in the game, the Seahawks stuck one final goal past Ander Andreev. This goal secured their victory, sweeping the weekend for UNCW.
