Tar Heels clinch back-to-back shutouts in opening weekend

North Carolina Men’s Ice Hockey team will begin the 2026-27 season with a 2-0 record, dominating the UNC Charlotte 49ers on Friday and Saturday with scores of 6-0 and 4-0, respectively. 

The new season is characterized by the locker room’s leadership as senior forward Matt Grady was announced as team captain after three seasons as a Tar Heel. UNC head coach Steve Rice describes him as a leader whose physicality feeds the team. Grady credits his predecessor, Patrick O’Shaughnessy, as a strong influence for him going into this season.

“Patty was a big inspiration to me in my last three years, and [I’m] trying to follow his leadership style, which is just lead by example, work your hardest in the corners and let the fellas see that and build on it,” he said.

The first-years of the team have been especially active thus far, credited with one-fourth of the goals scored in both Tar Heel wins. With more than 10 new roster additions, the locker room has undergone significant roster changes. While such a large shift in personnel could be a cause for worry for a team that lacks uniformity, the 2-0 start has proven that despite their unfamiliarity, the players are already working well as a collective. 

Saturday’s game started off strong with three goals in the first period, all scored within two minutes of each other. Forwards Ethan Balamucki and Jack Glen both scored their first goals as Tar Heels, while Jake Gelman scored his second goal of the weekend. 

“It was pretty electric, but you know, I had to play it cool a little bit. You know, act like I’ve been there before,” Balamucki said. 

Balamucki has already proven himself a valuable asset to Tar Heel Hockey.

“Balamucki’s got an amazing shot for a freshman. He shoots the puck really well. He’s got good stick handling and he’s really defensively sound,” Rice said. 

Beginning the season undefeated, multiple players are optimistic about the team’s performance as the season continues to unravel.

“I’m looking forward to having a great year. Hopefully winning the ACC for sure,” junior forward Owen Kenny said.

Grady has a more pragmatic outlook on the rest of the season, wanting his team to stay focused on the game and the areas they can improve in. He acknowledged the challenge ahead as they will play Liberty University on Sept. 11, the No.5 ranked team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association last season. 

“Starting off 2-0 feels great, but we have probably the best opponent we’ll play all season next week. So it’ll be a big test and we’re gonna make sure we’re not cocky, but we’re confident. We can play with anyone on our schedule, it’s just a matter of preparing the right way, so that’s what we’re gonna do this week,” he said.
