2025 New Years Classic Preview: UNC, Virginia Tech Face Off Outdoors

This season has been one of great importance for the Tar Heels.
With the welcoming of Head Coach Steven Rice, the transition to ACHA Men’s Division One next season and the announcement of a fundraising campaign for a new arena, the future of the program remains exciting.
Now, as the winter break draws to a close, It’s time for Tar Heel Hockey to make its glorious return outdoors.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tar Heel Hockey and the Virginia Tech Ice Hockey team will begin their 2025 schedule outdoors at Truist Field, home of the MiLB’s Charlotte Knights, in the New Years Classic on Saturday night. The Tar Heels took their last meeting by a score of 7-0 last January. The on-ice action can be seen exclusively on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. EST.
UNC’s last match-up was against the Army Black Knights in Nov. Despite goals from Will Smith, Matt Grady and Nick Ansbacher, the team suffered a 4-3 loss. Tonight is an opportunity to add to the win column in the team’s current 12-8-2 record.
On the opposite side of the ice, the Hokies, led by Head Coach Joey Mullen, closed out their fall semester with an 8-1 victory against Denison.
Saturday’s contest marks a historic milestone for both teams, showcasing the growing impact of club hockey and its immense potential for expansion in the years that lie ahead.
The game will also feature tribute to Carolina’s hockey history with the debut of the team’s ‘50th-anniversary jerseys’ celebrating five decades of hockey excellence in Chapel Hill.

Tar Heel Hockey has also announced three honorary captains, each recognized for their contributions to North Carolina’s culture and identity.

Reflecting on the beginning of the season, forward Tommy Gilligan highlighted this match-up in his ‘Captains Feature’ as the game he was most excited for. It will be his first experience playing outdoors and having friends and family watching makes it even more special.
